Tans Fish

Amy Tan's purpose in writing "Fish Cheeks" is to show a point in time where she felt like an outcast in her own household, she felt like her culture was embarrassing because it didn't fit the american ways. She finally realized she cant change her culture and she has to accept that fact her culture is different from others and accept herself so others can accept her too. I know how she feels because i can recall feeling like an outcast in a room full a people who has judged me for who I am.

I was in the Roseville Galleria by myself and majority of people were caucasian and every store i went in i was talked down on or i was looked at funny like i couldn't afford anything in there. It irritated me because they don't know me from a can of paint and they don't know where i come from. It made me feel like i didn't belong in that mall, but as i started to leave i realized that i could afford what i came to get and it doesn't matter how people look at me I'm still going to do me. If i sag my pants a little, wear my hat backwards, show my tattoos, or walk a different way doesn't mean I'm not worthy of being in that Galleria. So i stayed and bought what I wanted and walked out being polite with a smile on my face. So i understand where Tan is coming from, but in the end we overcome and realize we have to accept who we are for others to accept us.

  1. Guy H, Accepting who you are is very important part of life you did a great job explaining that in your blog. There are alot of people who are judgemental and critical where ever you end up going, you just have to shrug it off and accept who you are.
